Ensure Your Car's Performance with OEM Spark Plugs

A spark plug consists of a housing, an insulator, and electrodes. The casing serves as the insulator's cover, and it also attaches the spark plug to the engine. The insulation then prevents the escape of heat from the unit's electrodes. This material eliminates the appearance of black streaks on the spark plug, which indicate leaking voltage from the equipment. Lastly, the electrodes conduct electricity that generates the spark, which is essential to your engine.

This tool is an essential part of every car. It provides the needed spark that stimulates the fuel and air mixture. This process makes it possible for your engine to produce power. Hence, a spark plug is responsible for starting your engine. A malfunctioning spark plug then causes issues like poor gas mileage, engine misfire, and slow acceleration.

Where are spark plugs located?

If your vehicle uses a four-cylinder engine, you can find spark plugs on the top or side of the engine. Meanwhile, six-cylinder engines will have these plugs on the top or side of the engine head. As for V6 and V8 engines, the vehicle spark plugs can be found on either side of the engine.

Do diesel engines have spark plugs?

Diesel engines do not have spark plugs. These engines use glow plugs instead of igniting the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. This yields higher compression, which then makes the fuel in diesel engines ignite faster than in gas engines, especially during cold temperatures.

How long do spark plugs last?

The lifespan of spark plugs depends on what they’re made of. For instance, copper plugs can last from 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Platinum plugs can last up to 60,000 miles, while High-end iridium plugs can work for up to 100,000 miles before having potential issues or needing to be replaced.

What does a bad spark plug look like?

A defective spark plug can have damaged electrodes and black deposits on the ends of the components. The deposits indicate an unbalanced air-fuel mixture, while the damaged electrodes can cause engine misfires. Auto spark plugs can also get wet and have rusty electrodes, have oil deposits, or get burnt over time.

Do spark plugs come pre-gapped?

Spark plugs that are installed on production cars are all pre-gapped. This is also true for modern spark plugs in the market today. Always check the minimum gap needed in your spark plugs according to the manufacturer’s requirements for your ride. For example, Subaru spark plugs can have gaps set between 0.028” and .060”. Your owner’s manual should give you the ideal gap for your spark plugs upon installation.
