Maintaining Your Car’s Thermostat
A thermostat is a component that sits between the engine and the radiator. Its primary function is to regulate engine temperature.
A thermostat works by opening and closing to control coolant flow depending on the engine’s temperature. When the engine is cold, a thermostat stays closed. But when the engine coolant rises in temperature—typically around 180 F/82 C—the thermostat opens, allowing the coolant to pass through the radiator.
A thermostat opens or closes depending on the state of the coolant. Having to adapt to changes in temperature could damage it, however. This could result in major engine damage if left unchecked.
There are several signs to watch out for to see if your thermostat is no longer functioning properly. If the temperature gauge has reached abnormal levels and the engine is overheating, for instance, it could be a sign that your thermostat needs replacement. On the flipside, if your car fails to heat up properly, there’s a possibility that the thermostat is stuck in its open position.

How many thermostats does a car have?
Cars often have two thermostats: one for their air conditioning system and the engine. AC thermostats or temperature control sensors let you toggle the cabin air temperature. The engine thermostat prevents it from overheating.
How long does a car thermostat last?
Auto thermostats can last up to ten years with proper maintenance. However, you might need to change them more frequently if you drive your car in varying conditions. Faulty vehicle thermostats can cause frequent engine overheating and temperature fluctuations. If you encounter any of these problems, you must change your thermostat immediately.
Which way does a thermostat go in a car?
Vehicle thermostats have two ends. One is deeper with a spring, which you place into the engine. The other end is shorter and goes into the thermostat housing. Other thermostats may also have a tab that slots into the thermostat flange. Make sure no parts are loose once you replace your thermostats for proper installation.
Why is my car overheating with a new thermostat?
Overheating can stem from the following:
A clogged radiator or heater core (or both)
A failing water pump
A damaged radiator
Other problems with your coolant
If you notice any of these warning signs, we advise driving your car regardless of distance or circumstance. Have a mechanic check your vehicle to address overheating, as it can be due to numerous things like a faulty pump or thermostat.
Can you run a car without a thermostat?
You can run a car without a thermostat in warm climates. Otherwise, the engine won’t be at an optimal temperature, and the heater may blow cold air instead. Furthermore, driving without a thermostat can reduce gas mileage or vehicle performance. The engine will adjust the gas mixing valve to get more fuel to compensate for the lack of a thermostat, causing these negative effects.
